Frequently Asked Questions:

1. What exactly does a volunteer art docent do?

As a volunteer art docent, your main role is to introduce students to the world of art through engaging and interactive lessons. You will have the opportunity to present various art techniques, styles, and famous artists to the students. Whether it's painting, drawing, or sculpting, you'll be there to nurture their creativity and encourage them to express themselves through art.

2. Do I need to be an art expert to become a docent?

Absolutely not! You don't need any formal art training or expertise to be a volunteer art docent. The provided materials and lesson plans are designed to be easy to follow, and they cater to all skill levels. Your enthusiasm and passion for art are what truly matter, as you'll be inspiring the students through your own love for creativity.

3. How often do I need to volunteer, and how much time will it require?

As a volunteer art docent, you only need to commit to one art lesson per month in the classroom. This flexibility allows you to choose a schedule that works best for you and doesn't overwhelm your existing commitments. If you are unable to commit to one lesson per month, we work with other docents to help ensure your class receives art docent lessons all year long. Most classes have more than one art docent sign up, in this case, you will have a co-docent to split lessons with or join each month. The more art docents we have, the more art opportunities we can provide our Clara Barton students!

4. What kind of support will I receive as a docent?

You'll receive ample support and resources from the art docent program. The art materials and lesson plans will be provided to you in advance through LWSD Art Docent Lessons so you can prepare and feel confident before entering the classroom. Additionally, the school staff and teachers will be there to assist you with classroom management. Check out our Facebook page to connect with other art docents to share tips, experiences, new projects ideas and photos.

5. Can I come up with my own art topics and lessons?

Absolutely! While there will be pre-prepared materials available, you are more than welcome to bring in your own ideas and topics. Your unique perspective and creativity will be appreciated, and it's an excellent way to add a personal touch to your teaching.
