Clara Barton PTSA Enrichment Program - Fall 2022

The Clara Barton PTSA offers an Enrichment Program with classes that will help students to:

  • Grow in new areas and learn new skills
  • Connect with kids from other grades and classes
  • Build community with local and national education providers

Whether learning to play chess, building confidence singing, learning new languages, art, karate, robotics, math or modern dance. We have a comprehensive before and after-school program to keep students positively engaged. We hope you find exciting, fun opportunities from PTSA for your student. Please read policies and procedures before registering.

Before registering, please note:

  • All classes are in person.
  • Morning classes are from 8:10-9:10. Afternoon classes are from 3:50-4:50. Wednesday afternoon classes are from 2:20-3:20.
  • Most classes run 9-10 weeks.
  • We request every participating family to sign up to chaperone for at least one class.

Please read the Enrichment Program Class Policies and Procedures for details on refund and cancelation policies, chaperoning, and additional terms and conditions. By enrolling in before and after-school activity, you agree to the class policies and procedures.

 

Financial Assistance

Financial need-based scholarships may be available upon request. Please email school counselor, Madison Lecompte at mlecompte@lwsd.org

  • All student scholarship requests will be made directly to the school counselor, who will determine which students qualify.
  • By request, one Before or After School Enrichment Class per scholarship eligible student per enrichment semester may be sponsored as the Before/After School Classes budget allows.
  • A maximum of 1 spot per 10 registration spots available for enrichment classes may be held back for scholarship students.

Karate (Grades K-3)

Karate Students will learn and practice Karate skills with punching bags, breaking boards, blocking drills, kicking targets and more!  Karate-X has been teaching in the Puget Sound for 20 years, with a Martial Arts program specifically designed for preschool and elementary students.  Our professional instructors know how to motivate kids while building self-confidence and discipline. Belt rank testing is held at the end of each session, giving students goals to aim for and recognition of their accomplishments. Thousands of kids have enjoyed Karate-X classes, and yours will love it too!

Sensei Brendan Requa has been a top instructor with Karate-X for 8 years.  He is a natural at working with kids, and in the past 20 years has been a preschool teacher, sports coach, and para-educator.  He has a passion for seeing kids work through challenges to be the best they can be! Most importantly, he enjoys seeing kids have fun while learning Karate!

Singing (Grades 3-5)

Singing skills are essential to young performers interested in musical theater. Geared for students who want to study voice but are not ready to commit to private singing lessons, this small class is perfect for the aspiring performer. Students will study musical terms and singing techniques and explore their voices through solos from Broadway and movie musicals. At the end of the session students will confidently sing solo for families and show off what they’ve learned!

With experienced, best in the biz teaching artists, we are excited to offer performing arts programming this year for Grades K-12. Our goal is to come alongside you, and support and inspire your students in their creative learning.

Modern Dance (Grades K-2)

Modern Dance Children will be actively exposed to movements, balance , coordination and fun. Each class will be a combination of dance styles like Modern dance-Hip-Hop and Jazz. Students develop confidence and creativity while learning new choreography. Children will be learning how to do splits, backbend bridge and pirouettes.

Spanish (Grades K-5)

Come and join us in a bilingual, multicultural education which opens doors and minds to the world. PANW offers language enrichment program for students who wish to get a head-start before high school and have fun while learning a language. The class is taught by an experienced teacher using the curriculum that is carefully designed to introduce children with new vocabulary and their correct pronunciation. Lessons are constructed around five elements for elementary: Total Physical Response activities, songs, games, crafts and culture. Groups are organized by language level and age for better interaction.

Lego-Foundational Engineering: Machines + Contraptions (KG-2) 

Does your child love to tinker and create new things, or are they the kind of learner who likes to break things apart to see what’s inside? If so, they’re going to love Snapology’s Foundational Engineering: Machines and Contraptions program! This program gives your student the tools they need to understand mechanical movement and the importance of simple machines. They will see these moving parts up-close as they follow instructions to build various machines and contraptions, then use the models to develop new design ideas, test out physics concepts, and even play games with their partners and classmates! Whether they are the creative-constructive type or prefer the inquisitive-deductive way of learning, this program is sure to spark their engineering interests!

Chess (Grades K-5)

All About Chess: In this chess program students will practice learning with games against their peers, have a focused lesson and play fun variant chess games. In advanced classes, a simulated tournament will be organized. Any skill level is welcome.

My name is Brad Stensland and I have been doing before or after-school chess programs for over 10 years including at Clara Barton since it opened! After working in the field, I decided to create my own business with the goal of establishing an amazing program that helps children build confidence, sportsmanship, critical thinking and have fun through the game of chess. I have a developed curriculum to accommodate all skill levels from beginner to advanced. I have Bachelor Degrees from University of Washington in History and Comparative History of Ideas. I have been working with children for over 30 years."

Real World Robotics (Grades 3-5)

In Snapology's Real World Robotics class, students interested in technology will create robotic models inspired by real life robotic technologies. Students will learn about gear ratio, sensors, simple machines, and programming as they build alarm devices, earthquake detectors, robotic arms, and much more. Your child will have a blast exploring the world of robotic technologies as they build, learn, and play.
